I really hope that the next generation of phones have better 4K encoding. I have to be honest, I am pretty unhappy with video quality at 4K with the pixel 2 XL. It could be a lot better. Even with third-party program like filmic Pro cranked to 100 megabits per second, the video quality is still pretty poor.
That's probably not the fault of the encoder but the lenses and sensor. Pixel peeping raw images from even really excellent cameras (pixel 2xl) shows a mess of noise.
There was a discussion about it in XDA developers where a professional video editor went in and analyzed the compression of the video and found it it's just doing a very very fast encode with tons of compression artifacts. It's not a problem with the sensor or the lens. It's a problem with the fact that the signal processor or whatever they use to encode video is just using a very quick and dirty compression method.
