Balance gameplay between consoles and PC? Wow, isn't this argument done yet? Keyboard and mouse is an INFERIOR method of control for most video games, not RTS obviously. Some people are better with mouse, some with joysticks. I'm so sick of hearing this, SHUT YOUR FUCKING FACE!!!!
It never was an argument, keyboard and mouse is far superior to a console controller, especially when it comes to FPS games.
Maybe this is why I read this game will have no recoil, they're trying to level the playing field. I wouldn't be surprised to see some kind of artificial limitation for the PC side to help the analog sticks even more.
It's gonna be a massacre unless they completely gimp the PC controls and/or give console players a bevy of auto aim aids that PC users won't get... Even then, I doubt it'll even lead to parity. System's just gonna end up rarely matchimg up any console player against any competent PC player.
Didn't MS try this already on a shooter no one bought? Shadow something, I remember PC Gamer running a match against the editors of a console mag and destroying them. They might've done it with Halo too (all on PC, but some playing with game pads and others with keyboard & mouse).
This is what they will most likely do: 1) When you see a match you want to join, a keyboard icon will be there, indicating PC gamers are on it. 2) Remember, the PS3 has keyboard and mouse support as well, so when you plug it in and you are hosting a match, a keyboard icon will be shown there as well.
Personally I think all they need to do is let the match making system work and everything will be fine. If there is some Terrible player on a PC what is wrong with them playing against decent console players. Also they are allowing at least PS3 players to use mouse and keyboard so other than their machines running at lower fps they should be fine.
So in effect you ability to play determines your skill level and you are matched against other people with similar skill level. If you get good enough with a move, or controller you should be able to play people on PCs.
Yeah matchmaking should work since it filters out how bad or good you are with a certain input device and strains it all down to how good you are period. In this instance a good PC player can be paired with a better console player.
You're joking right, do you seriously believe that? Sounds to me like you've never played a game on a PC, or at very least haven't bothered trying to learn how to use a mouse+keyboard for longer than the 5 minutes you got frustrated with not having a joystick. It's pretty rare to find a game that plays better with a joystick. Sure they exist, but most games can play equally as well, if not FAR better (FPS, RTS) with a mouse and keyboard. This is not even debatable.
There is no matter of "some are better with <Input Device>," 99% of games play better with a mouse and keyboard. Period.
So your third example seems to be several completely different genres, all of which are completely playable just as easily on a mouse and keyboard, if not better in some cases. Your fourth example is just hilarious, referring to strategy games as "C&C type games" which implies to me you either wrote that post without much thought or you honestly haven't played games on the PC much at all. (I would say RTS but there are non-realtime strategy games that can fall under the same category). The only other category I will give to a controller is classic games (like nes/snes/etc) only because their designs were optimized for a controller experience. Controllers do tend to work better in general for 2D games, especially platformers and RPGs.
The end all, be all argument is that PCs do it all better. You can use a keyboard/mouse, steering wheels/pedals, joystick, gamepad and even a 360 controller or Wiimote on a PC.
PCs have far more graphics processing power, mods, maps, independent servers and overall more versatility than consoles. Game companies hate this freedom so they develop for closed systems where they have the power. The other problem with PCs are the cost, lack of portability, lack of local multiplayer and intelligence needed to actually set one up.
For me... Driving, flying, sports, fighting, platformers and at least some 3rd person action/adventures... maybe some modern RPGs (Dragon's Age and likes)?
Strategies and FPS, mouse and keyboard. Though since I've been playing both PC and PS3 in the last 2 years, I have found more balance on PS3 FPS (like Bad Company 2 I played on both platforms) which I think is due to controller limitations... maybe lack of cheating as well.
FYI this has been tested and proved. Mouse and keyboard is a vastly superior control method for FPSers.
Back when Microsoft was debating on allowing cross platform play they did some testing. They put pro xbox players vs the average PC gamer. the PC players not only won, but never lost a single game through out the testing.
Which is probably why Xbox isn't included in cross platform play. They thought it would be unfair.
What a troll. If you knew anything about control in video games, you would know that keyboard and mouse is not inferior. Everyone knows that PC gaming requires more accuracy, why do you think L4D is MUCH easier on Xbox than PC? Because naturally your aiming is alot slower, because a joystick provides a huge limitation. Also, you do not have free aiming movement with joysticks, youre stuck facing one direction unless you touch the joystick, which then you have to estimate the amount of pressure to use. Completely unnecessary and you will not build nearly as much "skill" as one could with a mouse and keyboard.
You can think what you want, I will be laughing the entire time while i school "gamers" on their xbox and ps3.
Gameplay balancing issues aside, the prospect of cross platform gameplay on such a large scale is pretty tempting.
I find it disappointing that Microsoft never bothered exploring cross-platform gameplay in any meaningful way. They could have made a killing with XBOX-PC compatibility.
Well, PS3 does support keyboard and mouse I believe. Also yeah, controller people would need some kind of adjusted aiming system, like the cursor slows down immensely when directly over an enemy. It could work!
What you said might be true for certain genres (FPS being the most prominent), but I don't see why they couldn't continue working on cross-platform development for other genres that don't benefit from the key+mouse combination.
So no DX11 even DX10 then? I take it there will be no enhanced looking PC version if they're trying to make this as equal as possible and are also putting it on the vastly inferior OSX and it's out dated version of OpenGL that doesn't begin to compare to DX11.
Yes, but when will we see Half-Life 3?! We've been left on a cliff-hanger for what seems like 10 years now. By the time we see what happens, Gordon's grandson will have to be the hero.
Yeah but how many people actually use the keyboard and mouse for a PS3? If they've never had they're probably never going to want to, learning curve and all.
One thing is for certain, the best players on the consoles are never going to be matched with the best players on the PC. Matchmaking won't allow it, the best players on the PC are going to be far higher up the list. Maybe the decent players on the PC will be matched with the best on the consoles.
It's a good thing there's matchmaking, otherwise it's going to be a massacre. Have you ever watched console gamers play on YouTube? The analog makes it a nightmare to do anything accurately or fast. They get away with so much BS that would have had them shot in seconds on a PC. The turning speed is atrocious and they run around like they're geriatric.
Sometimes I watch a video of a new game. First I wonder how bad it looks. Second I wonder why the hell the player doesn't just shoot the enemy. It's then that I realize he's playing on a console and is probably actually trying his best to point his shooting device at the enemy.. hilarious.
Think about it... PC version will likely allow for higher resolution than PS3. It will probably allow for multiple display support which in turn gives a PC user more viewable range to see their opponent. Than you add in video card eye candy effects like AF and AA which will make distant opponents much easier to target.... If anything, this just might bulster PC sales because PS3 players will get tired of getting owned.
LoL Paint ball is a Trilion time more realistic than Any Fps but you have to have Friends and be able to process more sensory impututs than 2d tv/screen emulating 3d enviromenr. Just saying.

FPS = keyboard/mouseDriving games = X box controller
Lego Harrp otter/Indy/Star wars = Xbox controller
C&C type games = keyboard/mouse
I'd hardly say it was 99% of games
