So I went over to the motomaker.com website...and it wants me to create a Google+ account?? WTH do I need to create a social networking profile to buy a phone? That's a dealbreaker right there for me.

Aside from gmail itself, is there any Google service left that will take your data without demanding a G+ "upgrade" first?
  • rpmrush - Friday, August 16, 2013 - link

Wow..I have a G+ account. I logged in and the Motorola store states that it wants my name and email..I'm ok with that. AND it wants to know about my Google account info, wants my list of friends on G+, wants to post to all my friends that I visited the store...not ok with that..especially because it's going to harvest this info on it's own by accessing my account. There is no way to get around it. Technically..Moto is Google so they already have this info..so I guess it's nice of them to ask..but NO..you may not snoop through my account to advertise to others. Man that was the dealbreaker...I was going to buy the phone..now I'm getting the LG G2.

Well, technically, you can uncheck everything in the circles (though, very annoying to uncheck eveyrthing). And only let it share to yourself.

Ugh, I'm sick of every Google thing I do trying to upgrade me to +. I do-not-want-plus, period.

Love this phone, love that it's made in the U.S., but man am I getting sick of +...
  • steven75 - Friday, August 16, 2013 - link

Ha! That would definitely be the end of the transaction for me as well.

Soooo.. you don't have an Android phone, GMail address, Youtube, Picasa, Blogger, GDrive account, you don't use Chrome? Wow.. (Google account = G+ account)

I think you are automatically assigned a Google+ account when you do anything Google these days - like have a YouTube account, for example.

One more reason to dislike YouTube. :/

Looking forward to the full review!

"Other patterns will gradually be made available, along with the wood back options that we were shown"

What a smart move. Nothing like telling your customer to wait until later to make a purchase...

Does this mean you will be skipping the full review of another Lumia flagship?
  • sherlockwing - Friday, August 16, 2013 - link

Given that there isn't a full review for GS4(only Part 1) or Nexus 7(only a Mini review), It is just a matter of Brain being busy.
  • thesavvymage - Friday, August 16, 2013 - link

Brian is probably slammed, but just for some side info I believe Anand is handling the Nexus 7 review
  • Civilized - Friday, August 16, 2013 - link

Well, the GS4 review is fairly complete, and the Nexus 7 review covers most of the parts that are actually new. I just thought it was interesting that Anandtech, which is usually very technical, is prioritizing the review of "Oh look at the pretty colors!" over the state of the art Pureview technology which I find much more interesting to read about.
  • Anand Lal Shimpi - Friday, August 16, 2013 - link

The two are relatively unrelated. Testing on the Moto X continues while this post was relatively quick to put together.

Nexus 7 review is nearly done :)
  • sprockkets - Friday, August 16, 2013 - link

You know you never reviewed the Nexus 10 right?
  • Anand Lal Shimpi - Friday, August 16, 2013 - link

Not at all, Brian is currently working on the Moto X and 1020 in tandem I believe. He's been traveling like crazy to all of these events, plus there's a ton of effort that goes into truly understanding the behavior of the devices he's reviewing.

    Take care,
    Anand
  • Civilized - Friday, August 16, 2013 - link

Great to hear! Thing is, once you get used to reading the reviews here its very difficult to read them anywhere else. I am always looking forward to your dissections of the latest tech. Keep up the awesome work.
  • steven75 - Friday, August 16, 2013 - link

Kudos to Googerola for putting this out there, but at the end of the day, isn't a lot easier to just buy a thin case? Then you can change the colors anytime you want and the person you end up selling your phone to later doesn't have to have the same taste as you.

I think the same thing about the eventual "iPhone 5C" btw.
  • B-Unit1701 - Friday, August 16, 2013 - link

I know this comes as a shock, but not everyone sells their phones...
  • DukeN - Friday, August 16, 2013 - link

For those counting their dollars, the customization might hurt the resale value on this phone given the mediocre specs that go with it.
  • eallan - Friday, August 16, 2013 - link

No love for the black front??
  • thrawn_lives - Friday, August 16, 2013 - link

Will the full review be out before the 19th? I got an early invite to build my MOTO X, but I really rely on anandtech for my purchasing decisions.
  • Conficio - Tuesday, August 20, 2013 - link

I guess the most important option is missing, XL battery. I care about colors only after I get 48h standby time and 16h using the phone, and its smart computer build in.
The option of an extra large battery would be the one I'd want to buy.

Great device. It is flexible to customize by ourselves. Does anyone know if it supports OTG? If it does, then I can expand its storage with : http://goo.gl/U6IyY
